Repeat offender gets life sentence

Thursday, May 21, 2009

A repeat offender has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for drug charges.

A jury convicted Lloyd Wright, 30, of Charleston, on charges of distribution of cocaine base and distribution of cocaine base within proximity of a school, a 9th Circuit solicitor's office press release said.

As part of a joint operation by Charleston police and the FBI, Wright distributed cocaine base to an undercover officer on Sept. 19, 2007, the release said. It said Wright fled to Atlanta but was arrested there and was returned to Charleston to await trial.

Wright had seven previous convictions for charges that included drug distribution and unlawful carrying of a pistol, the release said.

It said the solicitor's office sought the mandatory life sentence under a state three-strikes law.
