Joint initiative targeting gun possession gets results

Date: 10/21/2008
Staff reports

Prosecutors announced today that 40 federal cases have been indicted so far under "Operation Fed Up" since the program was launched in August.

The operation is a joint initiative by federal and local authorities in Charleston and Berkeley counties targeting suspects who unlawfully possess and use firearms. The cases include armed robberies, felons in possession of firearms, and using guns during drug dealing.

The U.S. Attorney's Office, the 9th Circuit Solicitor's Office, along with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, identify cases made by various local authorities each week to determine if federal jurisdiction is present.
