Illegal gets 25 years for drug charge

Date: 3/8/2008

The Post and Courier

Saturday, March 8, 2008

An illegal immigrant from Mexico was sentenced to a mandatory 25 years in state prison this week after a Charleston County jury convicted him of selling a quarter-kilo of cocaine to an undercover Mount Pleasant police officer, authorities said.

Jose Luis Gutierrez Hernandez, 34, was sentenced Tuesday by Circuit Judge Markley Dennis. He was convicted of selling the drugs in connection with an Aug. 7, 2006, "buy-bust" operation at a strip mall parking lot on Long Point Road.

Hernandez likely will be deported after completing his sentence. Co-defendant Eduardo Pacheco Martinez received 18 years in prison after pleading guilty Monday. Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson called Hernandez's bravado about his drug-dealing past "sickening."
