19-year-old gets 40 years for killing

Saturday, January 31, 2009

A 19-year-old Charleston man was sentenced to 40 years in prison this week for murder.

Richard Vernon Deas was convicted after a trial at the Charleston County Judicial Center for the October 2007 shooting death of Leroy Simmons Jr., 30.

Warrants said Simmons was waiting for a cab on Line Street in the early morning hours when Deas approached him. After a fight, Simmons fell to the ground and Deas stood over him with a handgun. Deas fired, hitting Simmons three times, the affidavit said. He died hours later at Medical University Hospital.

Charleston police and U.S. Marshals took Deas into custody at a Franklin Street apartment. He received 40 years for the murder and five years concurrent for possession of a firearm during a violent crime.
